The Command .....continues.

              The command  tenure is  generally restricted to about three years.With in this period the commanding officer displays his professional competence, administrative skill,and man management.At the same time he is expected to maintain the Regimental spirit and boost up image of the Regiment to higher level than it was at the time of his taking over.

                           Ganesan,as readers may be aware by this time,is dedicated "Son of the Regiment ".From 1964,he is associated with the Regiment.He is an emergency commissioned officer,and not the one aspiring to be "General".He is upright and blunt in his dealings.He considers that "he has to give best performance,and it is upto the reviewing officers to see whether he is fit for further promotion or not.

                        It was with that convictions,he set right the "Court of enquiry proceedings,"which no other commanding officer would have done at the cost of his career. All the unit commanders under 5 Mountain Division had come to know that Ganesan is a different type of officer.

                   In early 1985,4 Engineer Regiment was ordered to move to Northern command,which was a routine matter.Accordingly advance party of 4 Engineer Regime comprising of representatives of all sub units,totalling about 150 were sent to Uhampur.The Regiment was expected to move in two-three months.The leave patry were asked to report to new location on expiry of leave.The new arrivals were asked to report to new location.Under these circumstances,one can visualize that the unit strength at 5 Mountain Dive Area was reducing slowly.The move of the Regiment was getting delayed than normal time.Under these circumstances,the G O C 5 Mountain Dive ordered "'OP Alert" and units were asked to move to their OP location.All ranks of 4 Engineer Regiment were strained beyond the limit to give their best.

                    In November 1985,ie about 6 months after move order was issued,Ganesan wrote to Chief Army staff General Sunderji, explaining the present state of morale of troops and requested him to give definite date of move of the Regiment. Gen Sundreji,known for his toughand strict actions,immediately replied that Regiment will move on 25 Dec1985.He had sent orders down the line that 4 Engr Regiment will move smoothly with out leaving a rear party.

                       The Regiment arrived at Udhampur as "Command troops ".It was a confused set up of command.Administratively under 71 Sub Area,Technically under Chief Engineer Northern Command,Operationally under Chief Engineer 16 Corps.The Sub Area Commander and the Chief Engineer Northern command thought that a "Pioneer Company for area cleaning "has arrived.They were given shock treatment about "Command " by Ganesan in the next 1-2 years.
